Artist Bio:

"Gerb, a Wilmington, NC artist, paints from her home studio, bringing imaginative, feminine, nostalgic works of art to life. She seeks to represent themes of girlhood and womanhood as she explores what it means to be a young woman in the South. Gerb’s practice centers on large-scale portraits and scenes, mainly using acrylic on canvas and wood. The personality that Gerb brings into each painting continues to grow as she evolves as a young 25-year-old artist. Her style cultivates an imaginative visual experience, one that she hopes will provoke wonder and curiosity in the viewer."

“Wallpapered” Artist Collection Statement:

"This collection of work draws from the cultural fabric and natural landscape of Wilmington and reflects my feeling of place here. The Venus flytrap motif weaves life into the series with its bright red and green form, while paying tribute to this special brewery that I’ve been a neighbor to for years. Playing with new mediums and ways of painting feels invigorating – in this series, I experimented with surf and skateboards as materials that represent the youthful spirit of this town. I’ve grown accustomed to the linear squares and rectangles of a canvas; bringing in a fresh, dynamic mindset to this show only makes sense as Spring turns to Summer.

The wallpapered patterns, which I have never done before, evokes themes I like to explore in my work, like femininity, childhood nostalgia, and imagination. Like all my work, this collection invites questions like: What are my subjects doing? How did they get into the painting? How do they feel? And do they want to be here at all? I hope my audience also wonders how life must be for them inside their chosen setting (canvas, wood, or repurposed object)."
