Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project
Wrightsville Beach
Overview
The Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles, particularly loggerhead sea turtles, on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Their primary focus is on monitoring nesting activity, protecting nests, and ensuring the safe hatching and release of sea turtle hatchlings.
"Volunteering is a season-long commitment that begins with a training meeting in March and lasts until fall (typically September or October, depending on when the last turtle nest of the season hatches). Because sea turtle nesting is completely unpredictable, and we never know exactly when a sea turtle nest will be laid or hatch, volunteers commit to a season and must be permanent residents of the greater Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach region during this time."
Volunteer opportunties include:
- Monitoring the beach at dawn for signs of nesting
- Nest sitting
- Providing education information and selling merchandise at events
