About This Event

Turn an oversized tee or polo into an everyday "baby" tee!

In this hands-on upcycling workshop, you’ll learn how to work with jersey + stretch fabrics while transforming a thrifted or old oversized shirt into your own custom baby tee. We’ll be using the Honey Girl Tee pattern by Paradise Patterns as our guide and working primarily with a variety of zig-zag stitches to create a finished garment that has stretch and holds up to wear.

Beginners are welcome! Some basic experience using a sewing machine will be helpful, but you do not need to be an expert. We’ll walk you through the process step-by-step and help you get comfortable working with stretchy fabrics.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to work with jersey + stretch fabrics

  • How to choose the right oversized garment for your project

  • How to adjust and cut an oversized tee or polo into a baby tee

  • How to use zig-zag stitches for sewing stretch fabric

  • Tips for sewing seams, hems + other details on knit fabric

  • How to follow a sewing pattern and use it as a guide for your own upcycling projects

YOUR PROJECT

You’ll leave with your own upcycled baby tee!

For this workshop, you’ll need to bring one oversized T-shirt or polo of your own to transform.

What to bring:

  • 1 oversized T-shirt or polo — XL or XXL recommended

  • The bigger the better! We recommend bringing the largest shirt you have available.

  • Ideally, choose a shirt that is 100% cotton or 95% cotton + 5% elastane. jersey fabric can be hard to work with, so it

Sizing note: Your starting shirt needs to be significantly larger than your desired finished size. For example, if you normally wear a small, we recommend bringing at least a Large shirt to upcycle. I typically use a size XXL to upcycle into a size Large Baby TEE...

Please avoid shirts that are very thin, extremely stretchy, or made primarily from polyester, as they can be more difficult to work with for this project.

PATTERN INCLUDED

We’ll be using the Honey Girl T-Shirt by Paradise Patterns for this workshop.

Your workshop fee includes your own copy of the Honey Girl T-Shirt pattern + instructions — a $16 value — so you can continue making your own baby tees at home after the workshop.
