Jim Nelson is a songwriter, musician and band member living in Wilmington. Whether with humor, oddball characters or story songs Jim’s writing has avoided the personal narrative that is the stock and trade of the ‘singer songwriter’. Surrounded by a world that is complex and nuanced he has written about themes both stirring, absurd, lighthearted and heartbreaking. As a musician, Jim has had the privilege of playing with extraordinary bands; this year he was thrilled to do tour dates with Alligator recording artist Chris O’Leary and is a founding member of The Rhythm Bones who bring a unique brand of New Orleans funk to venues all over North Carolina.

Jim’s a piano player influenced by his upbringing in south Louisiana where Cajun, zydeco, blues and country music all blend in a heady aural gumbo. The influence of Ray Charles, and Dr John is unmistakable in his playing and with 3 CDs released to date and a new release on the way Jim will continue to tell stories in his own singular voice.
